The last wish of butcher Jack Dodds was to disperse his ashes into the sea. His four friends thus set out on a journey to fulfill his last wish. His wife, Amy, however refuses to join his friends for reasons unknown. There are various little updates given about the places through which they pass during the course of their journey like Old Kent Road, New Cross, Blackheath, Dartford and Gravesend.
On the surface level, it may seem like a simple story, but actually explores deeper meanings of human courage as well as the complexity of human nature. The main characters in the book other than Jack Dodds, the butcher, are Vince Dodds, a car salesman and adopted son of Jack. Ray 'Lucky' Johnson, the main narrator, was Jack's peer in the war and had even saved his life once. Lenny 'Gunner' Tate was the drinking partner of Jack while Vic Tucker, a funeral director, is the most sensible guy of the group who stops all the fights before they turn into something serious.
